About Our Service Project
The AFRH-W is nestled in the heart of Washington, DC, on lovely sprawling grounds that provide a warm, country-like setting. Majestic trees, beautiful views, tranquil wildlife, and historic landmarks abound on this sanctuary. Positioned at the city's second-highest elevation, our community enjoys cooler summers, mild winters, and breathtaking views of iconic landmarks including the Washington Monument, U.S. Capitol, National Cathedral, and Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.
Formerly known as The Old Soldiers’ Home, the AFRH has always been a sanctuary for our enlisted troops. There are a little under 700 residents at the AFRH in DC.
The Armed Forces Retirement Home is a continuing care retirement community (CCRC) accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) and The Joint Commission (TJC). On the DC campus, the purpose is to maintain the mission that began in 1851 to fulfill our Nation’s promise to its Veterans by providing a premier retirement community with exceptional residential care and extensive support services. The vision is to provide a retirement community committed to excellence, fostering independence, vitality and wellness for veterans, making it a vibrant place in which to live, work and thrive. Residents have the opportunity to participate in a variety of life enriching activities that promote personal wellness, growth, and fulfillment. Residents live on a beautiful campus, free from the hustle and bustle of the city, surrounded by veterans from all walks of life who share a common bond of military service.
During our service project, we will have games set up and interact with the residents as they play the games. Examples include Giant Jenga and an arcade-style basketball game. We will serve refreshments (coffee and pastries). We will have a goody bag filled with toiletries and other items for each resident who attends and will have special prizes for “winners” of the games. We will have time to interact with the residents and hear the stories of these Heroes.
