Through the years Gold Star Mothers have been compelled to honor their sons and daughters in many ways. Some have felt the urge to write a poem. American Gold Star Mothers, Inc. is blessed to have many of those heartfelt poems in our possession. Here are are a couple which mention a Mother's heart during February.

Untitled

To the Mother whose son through lasting night
Lies under a cross of gleaming white;
Who bears in her heart a pain age- old-
The Mother who wears the heart of gold.

Untitled

I wear a poppy on my breast
Where once a boyish head found rest
And often when the day is done
I see again my soldier son.
He comes to me in such a way
That I can almost hear him say,
"Do not worry, Mother dear,
I am coming home some day".
And when the tears unbidden start
I place a hand above my heart
To there caress a tousled head
But only find a poppy red.

The Coast Guard Reserve birthday is celebrated annually on February 19, marking its establishment in 1941. The force was created to enhance national maritime security, particularly during World War II, and has since evolved into a critical surge force for national defense, natural disasters, and port security.

Four Chaplains Day

Four Chaplains Day, observed annually on February 3, honors the supreme sacrifice of four U.S. Army chaplains—George L. Fox, Alexander D. Goode, Clark V. Poling, and John P. Washington—who gave their life jackets to soldiers and went down with the torpedoed USAT Dorchester on Feb. 3, 1943, embodying selfless service and interfaith unity.
The Four Chaplains
The four chaplains represented three different faiths and served together, offering a powerful example of brotherhood during World War II:
  • Lt. George L. Fox: Methodist minister.
  • Lt. Alexander D. Goode: Rabbi.
  • Lt. Clark V. Poling: Dutch Reformed minister.
  • Lt. John P. Washington: Roman Catholic priest.
The Story of the USAT Dorchester
On January 29, 1943, the Dorchester departed New York for Greenland with over 900 soldiers, merchant seamen, and civilian workers. Early on February 3, 1943, a German submarine torpedoed the ship off the coast of Newfoundland. Amidst the chaos, the four chaplains maintained calm, guided soldiers to safety, and distributed life jackets. When life jackets ran out, the chaplains gave their own to others. Survivors reported seeing the chaplains on the deck, arm-in-arm, praying together as the ship sank in less than 20 minutes, killing 672 men.

Sweets and Valentines for Veterans

Toni Gross
Department: FL-PR
Chapter: Tampa Bay
American Gold Star Mothers, Inc. National President and Tampa Bay Chapter Member, Annette Kirk, teamed up with Toni Gross at the Veterans Council of Hillsborough County meeting, 1.26.2026. Annette and Toni baked and served valentine cupcakes during the social hour time. Both have been members of the council for 13 years plus each, a combined membership of at least 30 years, baking and serving cookies and such before each monthly meeting. Amazingly, when the Council Treasurer snapped this photo, it was not known that the Woody Williams Gold Star Family Memorial Monument was in the photo. Annette and Toni served over 50 "sweet" and hungry veterans a baked treat in an effort to thank them and wish them Happy Valentine's Day.
