October 26 is recognized as the National Day of the Deployed, a day dedicated to honoring those deployed in service to the U.S. military. This observance honors all service members who have been deployed in service of our country. The day also acknowledges the sacrifices that military families make during deployment.
The first National Day of the Deployed was observed in 2006, when North Dakota announced a proclamation for the day, thanks to Shelle Michaeles Aberle, who petitioned Governor John Hoevento with the idea. October 26 was chosen for the date in honor of Shelle's cousin, LTC David Hosna, who had been deployed to Iraq (the day was Hosna's birthday). Welcome to today's episode of "Awesome Work." #NavyBirthdayThe United States Navy (USN) is the United States Armed Forces' naval warfare service branch and one of the seven uniformed services of the United States. The U.S. Navy is currently the largest, most powerful navy in the world, with the highest combined battle fleet tonnage. The service has over 340,000 personnel on active duty and more than 71,000 in the Navy Reserve.
With only two ships and a crew of eighty men, the Continental Navy was born on October 13, 1775. The decision of the Continental Congress set the Continental Navy on course to carry arms to the British army, not to defend against it. However, these two ships and crew represent the birth of the United States Navy. Throughout the Revolutionary War, their importance grew. Today, the United States maintains 40 naval bases across the country, including the world's largest Naval Station Norfolk, in Norfolk, Virginia. Below the sea, submarines became a part of the Navy during World War II. While experiments began in the late 1800s and during the Civil War, they did not become a large part of the Navy inventory until World War II. At that point, subs became necessary for surveillance and rescue, even though they were also armed. With the advent of the airplane, the Naval ships became vital stations for the Airforce as well. As a result, the Navy modified ships into floating landing strips. Today, joint Naval and Airbases such as Pearl Harbor-Hickam provide the country with sea and air defense fleets. On Veterans Day, we honor and thank the veterans who bravely served our country and the military
service members who serve today. Social Security benefits protect veterans when injuries prevent them from returning to active duty or performing other work. Both the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and Social Security have disability programs. You may qualify for disability benefits through one or both programs. Read our fact sheet, “Social Security Disability and Veterans Affairs Disability — How Do They Compare?”. Depending on your situation, some members of your family, including your dependent children or spouse, may be eligible to receive Social Security benefits. If you have a 100% VA compensation rating, Social Security will expedite your disability claim. Social Security has always changed to meet the needs of the people we serve and will continue to support you and your family. The online booklet, Social Security: What Every Woman Should Know, provides detailed information about how life events can affect a woman’s Social Security retirement benefits. These events may include marriage, death of a spouse, divorce, self-employment, and other life or career changes. Please share this information with the military families you know. Author: Trisha Mentzer, Social Insurance Specialist In just the two months that I have been on the NEB, I have learned so much about this organization and our ability to make a difference in the lives of our military and our members. Hi, I am Joan Snyder, one of the newest members to the AGSM National Executive Board for 2024-2025. My official role is National Banner Guard. I am also chairing the Community Service committee. My journey as a Gold Star Mother began on July 31, 2011, when my son, USMC Sgt Christopher Wrinkle and his military working dog, Tosca were killed in Afghanistan. Little did I know where this journey would take me. There are two reasons that motivated me to join AGSM and serve on the NEB; my son’s legacy and missed opportunities. My son did not leave behind a lot of material things, but he did leave behind a great love for his family, his friends, his church, and his country. He believed that our freedoms/rights as citizens of this country were worth protecting. Because of his sacrifice, he missed the opportunity to pursue his dreams. So, I want to ensure that our veterans can pursue their dreams. In addition to my full-time job and NEB responsibilities, I’m a location coordinator for Wreaths Across America. During my free time I enjoy working on our family farm, playing in several of our local community bands and enjoy spending time with family and friends. |
