#NationalGuardBirthdayDecember 13th commemorates the National Guard Birthday. On December 13th, 1636, the Massachusetts General Court established an official militia for the first time in the American Colonies. A component of the United States Army, the National Guard is primarily composed of citizen-soldiers who hold down full-time, civilian jobs, attend school, or as is often the case, both. At the same time, they are available to provide support and protection for the states' civilians or be called for military operations at a national level. Each U.S. state, District of Columbia, Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, and the territories of Guam and U.S. Virgin Islands maintain both an Army National Guard and an Air National Guard. HOW TO OBSERVE NATIONAL GUARD BIRTHDAYWhile not recognized as a Federal Holiday, National Guard members across the country celebrate the birth of the oldest military organization in the United States with galas, balls, and birthday parties. Since the National Guard is an integral part of each state, commonwealth, and territory, we all have a reason to celebrate this birthday! Take time to recognize a National Guard soldier or airman you know.
1. Medal of Honor
The most prestigious of all U.S. military decorations, the Medal of Honor (sometimes informally called the “Congressional Medal of Honor”) is the highest medal any U.S. service member can receive. Since it was created during the Civil War in 1861, the medal has only been given to “the bravest of the brave” and is awarded to service members who have displayed exceptional valor on the battlefield against an enemy. There are three versions of the medal – for the Army, Air Force and Navy (Coast Guard and Marine Corps personnel receive the Navy version) – and all recipients are given the award by the current president. Past Medal of Honor recipients include former President Theodore Roosevelt, Daniel Daly (known for his famous World War I battle yell, “Come on, you sons of b******, do you want to live forever?!”) and Travis Atkins (who sacrificed his life for his men in Iraq in 2007). To date, there have been 3,473 Medals of Honor awarded to service members across all branches. The United States Marine Corps' birthday is celebrated annually on November 10. The Corps was established in 1775 by the Second Continental Congress to support the U.S. Navy during the Revolutionary War. The Corps was originally called the Continental Marines.
The Corps' birthday was celebrated on July 11 from 1799 until 1921, when it was moved to November 10 to commemorate its founding. The Corps was abolished after the war due to budget reasons, but was re-established in 1798 by President John Adams. Birthday celebrations include:
A traditional Birthday Ball celebration includes a cocktail hour, dinner, a ceremony, and dancing. A symbolic tradition is passing the first piece of birthday cake from the oldest Marine to the youngest. October 26 is recognized as the National Day of the Deployed, a day dedicated to honoring those deployed in service to the U.S. military. This observance honors all service members who have been deployed in service of our country. The day also acknowledges the sacrifices that military families make during deployment.
The first National Day of the Deployed was observed in 2006, when North Dakota announced a proclamation for the day, thanks to Shelle Michaeles Aberle, who petitioned Governor John Hoevento with the idea. October 26 was chosen for the date in honor of Shelle's cousin, LTC David Hosna, who had been deployed to Iraq (the day was Hosna's birthday). #NavyBirthdayThe United States Navy (USN) is the United States Armed Forces' naval warfare service branch and one of the seven uniformed services of the United States. The U.S. Navy is currently the largest, most powerful navy in the world, with the highest combined battle fleet tonnage. The service has over 340,000 personnel on active duty and more than 71,000 in the Navy Reserve.
With only two ships and a crew of eighty men, the Continental Navy was born on October 13, 1775. The decision of the Continental Congress set the Continental Navy on course to carry arms to the British army, not to defend against it. However, these two ships and crew represent the birth of the United States Navy. Throughout the Revolutionary War, their importance grew. Today, the United States maintains 40 naval bases across the country, including the world's largest Naval Station Norfolk, in Norfolk, Virginia. Below the sea, submarines became a part of the Navy during World War II. While experiments began in the late 1800s and during the Civil War, they did not become a large part of the Navy inventory until World War II. At that point, subs became necessary for surveillance and rescue, even though they were also armed. With the advent of the airplane, the Naval ships became vital stations for the Airforce as well. As a result, the Navy modified ships into floating landing strips. Today, joint Naval and Airbases such as Pearl Harbor-Hickam provide the country with sea and air defense fleets.
