The AGSM, Inc.Department of FL-PR members had completed their veteran's service project at the park, 35 backpacks were filled with comfort items. We moms were ready to go home, when a proud Vietnam Veteran got out of his car at the park. He had no idea who we were....but with in minutes, we were gathered around him, chatting with him, asking him to tell us about his service. What would Grace have done???? She would have done the same....encouraging and lifting the spirits of those veterans who God brings into our path! Georgia American Gold Star Mothers Honored at 52nd Stand Up for America Day in Port Wentworth, GAOn Saturday, April 26, 2025, the City of Port Wentworth, Georgia hosted its 52nd annual Stand Up for America Day, a tradition born in 1971 during a time when returning Vietnam veterans faced heartbreaking disrespect upon coming home. In response to those injustices, former Mayor P.B. Edwards Jr., a World War II veteran and Purple Heart recipient, created this celebration in partnership with the Port Wentworth Missionary Alliance Church to honor America and its service members, past and present.
This year’s celebration carried forward that powerful legacy with music, patriotism, and community pride, and included a special moment of recognition for Georgia American Gold Star Mothers. Although the Department of Georgia AGSM had overlapping events that day, we were honored to be represented by Barbara Bilbrey, a dedicated member of our Georgia chapter since 2022 and former member of the Syracuse Chapter. Barbara delivered remarks during the ceremony and proudly accepted a $5,000 donation presented by the City of Port Wentworth to support the mission and programs of Georgia AGSM. The generous donation was organized by Port Wentworth’s Chief Financial Officer, retired Colonel Tom McMartin, who also presented the check during the event. The city also shared its plans for a 164-acre memorial park, a future landmark dedicated to service, remembrance, and reflection. We are deeply grateful to the City of Port Wentworth for their heartfelt generosity and enduring commitment to honoring military families and the memory of our fallen heroes. It was a privilege to be recognized on such a meaningful day, and we thank them for standing tall with us in remembrance and unity.
