The Impact on Gold Star Mothers and Families

Picture
The question has been asked, "Who is a Gold Star Mother?"
Since World War I, a banner with a Blue Star on a field of white with a red border has been placed in the window of a family home when a child joins the military. Each Blue Star represents a child in Military Service of the United States.
When a service member passes away during military service a
Gold Star is superimposed upon the Blue Star.
The Gold Star represents the honor and glory accorded the service member for their supreme sacrifice to their country
in offering the last full measure of devotion and pride of the family.

I joined American Gold Star Mothers in 2009. It was so comforting to walk into a room full of people and know that I did not have to explain the dog tags I wear around my neck, or the little gold pin that is on my collar. We have all experienced great pain, but we have decided not to let that pain define the rest of our lives, and together we can make it.

The fellowship of American Gold Star Mothers has allowed me to connect with others on this journey of being a Gold Star Mother.
When I am in the presence of other Gold Star Mothers,
I feel a level of comfort because we share the same pain of having lost a child while they were serving our country.

Being part of AGSM has provided me with an opportunity to be around people who "get it."  We are all at different stages in our grief process and continuing our lives without a loved one. At any given moment, you think you are the only one feeling that feeling. Being able to share time with other Moms eases some of those anxieties, helps you remember there is no right or wrong way to feel and, most importantly, reassures you that your Hero’s life and sacrifice will not be forgotten.

There is no way to properly quantify how the fellowship of other Gold Star mothers has affected my life, I cannot believe how patient and caring these ladies were who didn't even know me. They listened...for hours sometimes...as I talked, cried, and tried to process. But they also put me to work! Many days on this journey I have felt super low and ineffective but putting on my whites is sometimes like putting on my superman cape, especially when we are together - I feel more confident. Having the support, encouragement, and above all, understanding of the other moms is so vital. We are each other’s lifeline. I consider the fellowship of this organization a blessing and true kindness of the Lord.

The love and understanding the American Gold Star Mothers have for each other is amazing.
When I am around other Gold Star Mothers, the sense of comfort is overwhelming, I feel renewed, stronger, ready to conquer the world.

I found my way to the American Gold Star Mothers a couple of years after we lost our daughter.
I found sisters who lend a listening ear, a tissue to catch my tears, shared laughter when we need to lighten the moment, and the shared understanding that our children should never be forgotten. I immediately found acceptance without judgement, family, love, understanding, and a common purpose… channeling our grief by continuing the service of our children.
